Joe Cole to OT?

Believe the rumors at your own peril.

But this is one I will like to believe and I believe will happen soon.

Joe Cole is set to snub Chelsea and sign for Man Utd. He is set to join Michael Owen as talented English players who had long injury layoffs and admired in their youth by the best manager in England, Sir Alex Ferguson.

And I think it is a rumor that is spinning the right way. He is on a free transfer, he gets to go to the biggest club in England, and he fits the bill at Man Utd who is looking for a talented and footballing winger to replace an ageing legend in Ryan Giggs.

Usually rumors turn out fake, but I got a good feeling about this one.

Singapore is top.

While this is a blog dedicated to soccer related news, as a proud sports fan of Singapore origin, we recognise the stunning achievements of the sports fraternity in Singapore.

A small island, unheard of by many around the world's elite sporting countries is now the loudest name you will hear for anyone who watches the game of table tennis.

The Singapore women's team has clinched the World Table Tennis Championships, upsetting China 3-1 in the finals. This is the first time the POWERHOUSES of table tennis, China has been defeated in 19.... yes seriously 19 years in this competition. Ouch.

Can I say I am very, very proud of the Singapore women's team. While most of them are adopted citizens of Singapore (most of them were born in China)... they came as second rate players disregarded by the table tennis federation and national sports selection system in China. In other words, they were deemed "not good enough" to represent China.

They came to Singapore with new hopes of making it on the world stage. They settled down in a new country and trained exceptionally hard. They lost on two previous occasions in the finals of the Olympics and World Championships 2008 to the China team but they put their heads down and kept training.

This is what makes sports inspiring. There is no better feeling than when an underdog turns the tables on the perpetual favourites. In table tennis, nobody touches China (they are even greater than Brazil in soccer). Singapore has just beaten them on the world stage... its almost like the Singapore Lions beating Brazil 3-1 in the World Cup final. It is almost unthinkable.

If this isn't sporting history in the making of Singapore, I don't know what is. This is the best publicity you can have for the upcoming Youth Olympics to be held in Singaapore.

Majulah Singapore !! Or to our table tennis team chiefly made up of new Chinese immigrants... 好样子,新加坡 !!

The Special One is indeed special.

A man so arrogant yet so charismatic. He shares a love-hate relationship with the media and footballing paparazzi, he is well loved by fans on his side, but so detestable to fans of opposing teams. He is blunt, yet his words are strangely prophetic and wise, in the footballing sense that is. He is unafraid of any opponent, yet he respects all opponents. He plays boring football at times, but hey... they reap fantastic results.

Such is Jose Mourinho, the self proclaimed Special One. It is that undeniable charisma of a man who has led a struggling Italian giant in its European campaign to attaining European glory in just over two years, above and beyond the likes of Barcelona and Bayern Munich. He has single handedly put Serie A back on the world map of footballing dynasties.

I don't quite think Jose achieved his best at Chelsea. He was sacked prematurely. To me, Jose didn't believe in beautiful soccer, he believed in intelligent football and Chelski under its Russian owner wanted Joga Bonito. Alas, Jose proved he is no fluke when he first won the coveted European trophy with FC Porto.

If anyone should deny Jose the honor of being called the Special One in managing footballing teams, they should really look at his record, 2 European trophies already, multiple championships in various countries, that is a track record of success. No one likes a loudmouth, worse; no one likes a loudmouth that actually attains what he says he can.

To be the best that ever lived is one claim that Jose will have the rest of his career to live up to but boy... never has anyone in his generation coming closer to that than Jose himself. And guess what, he gets to steady the ship at the ultra entertaining but substance-lacking circus of football clubs; Real Madrid.

Will Jose get the best out of Ronaldo, Kaka, Benzema, Alonso and Raul? Don't bet against it.

Will Torres go?

The conquest of Chelsea for 09/10 has yet to settle and there are already plenty of rumors spinning in the transfer market.

Question of the pre season before the next BPL season starts: Will Fernando Torres go to Chelsea, the newly crowned English champions?

Well, the naysayer will tell you its highly unlikely, given the animosity between the blues and Merseyside, and Torres's professed loyalty to Liverpool.

But the reasoning will tell you Torres is sick of no silverware, poor tactics, lousy club management and low finances. All of these will supercede his loyalty and point him to the exit door. Where else but the English champions Chelsea?

Based on Torres's valuation, only a handful of clubs will dare pick up the tab. Real Madrid, Man Utd, Chelsea and Man City. Real is obviously out of the question, since Torres childhood club is Atletico Madrid, Man Utd will not fork out a 100 million for any player. Man City is not at the highest pinnacle of footballing achievements yet even if they have all the resources to lure him. So the next likely destination --> Chelski of Roman Abramovich.

Liverpool fans, keep your fingers crossed, and your hearts ready for the defect of one Spanish cult hero to London.

Man Utd is no one man team.

Is Man Utd a one man team? Maybe. It is hard not to when you have Wayne Rooney on your side.

But we have got so much to offer. Berba is a good player no matter what those pundits think. He is a different sort of player so don't compare him to Rooney. He is equally a genius when he is on it.

I hope, fingers crossed that Alex Ferguson unleashs Macheda or even Mame Biram Diouf sometime in the game, not in the last ten minutes, because I think the young boys have the surprise element, they do not know fear and Macheda is one heck of a box predator. He is like a young Filipo Inzaghi.

It is going to be tough against an experience German side. It always is when they are defending a lead BUT miracles happen in the theatre of dreams. Welcome to Old Trafford.

Swimming with the sharks.

The BPL is one of the toughest leagues in the world... and it is so for a reason. There is no learning curve, you get thrown in with the sharks and you are expected to swim faster.

The BPL also showcases the gulf between the naive managers from the wily old ones. Zola of West Ham and Roberto Martinez of Wigan reminds us why it took Sir Alex so many years to establish his reign at the top of the pile. It is great to play pretty football but when the rubber hits the road, you've got to play ugly to survive. That is what Sam Allardyce, Mick McCarthy and Tony Pulis know and that has seen their teams win crucial matches for relegation battle's survival of the fittest. Portsmouth and Burnley are going down.
With a shrewd and battle hardened manager like Iain Dowie now in charge at Hull City, you will feel that they always have a fighting chance.

Will West Ham get relegated? I fear so. Will Wigan get dragged in as well. I think so. There is no place for naive management in the BPL. A certain Rafa Benitez at Merseyside should also take note of that.

Old School Pepsi-Soccer Commercials.

Remember these funny soccer commercials sponsored by Pepsi? I'm sure it'll bring back some fond memories about the game and the commercial itself.

No World Cup in Singapore, Still.

There are but a handful of countries who will not be airing the World Cup 2010. Guess what. Singapore is one of them. A developed country, looking to be unique. Our regulators have sure done a good job delivering to their promise of "Uniquely Singapore". A country with the likes of Somalia to not air the World Cup 2010.

To our regulators: I suppose Singapore has not made it to the dream of World Cup 2010. But there's no need to punish the entire country for your incapability!

Jose wins.

In the battle of Jose vs Chelsea, note that I used Jose, not Inter, Jose won. The game was clearly the old boss against his old team.

And of course, the expensively assembled team at Chelsea can never outsmart their commander and chief, whom I presume with certainty knows them inside out. He set out to deny the Blues a win, and he did one better, he won at Stamford Bridge. This is proof that Jose Mourinho is one of the best tacticians there is in football if you want to win a match and a tournament for the matter. He is a brilliant tactician and more so, an incredible motivator. How else do you expect Inter to come to Stamford Bridge, the stronghold of Chelsea and bring them to their knees.

Sure, there were controversial moments and Drogba will complain about mistreatment again, but the Ivorian only has his own reputation to blame. He is a pathological diver, referees think twice about awarding him penalties and free kicks.

Looks like Roman Abramovich will have to take drastic measures next season to seal himself a Champions League trophy. Not only does he need to rid himself of the team which Jose built, he will need to give Carlo Ancelotti financial muscle to build a team worthy of doing just that. The Chelsea of today is too familiar to their nearest opponents and as long as Jose is around, they will never outdo him with his own team.

Sorry Roman, I still think you made the biggest mistake by letting Jose go. If all I wanted was to win a Champs League trophy, Jose Mourinho will have to be my top man for the job.

Calderon is a pighead.

You think Real Madrid being dumped out of the Champions League will make some people shut up and take notice that their strategy of buying to win is a bad strategy. Wrong.

Calderon, the epitome of loudmouth at Real Madrid is clearly rubbing himself in the wrong direction again, hoping to sign Wayne Rooney as you would have it... to Real Madrid. Join the circus that is Real Madrid... pfft.

Dumped out by a modest team like Lyon. Pooooor Karim Benzema who went to Real thinking he was joining a club that could at least beat his old club. He will be better off sending in a transfer request now to consider rejoining his old club. At least he gets to start games, not sit on benches.

Wayne Rooney I think will never do a Ronaldo. I mean... he just needs to look at Ronaldo's plight to understand that simple truth. The world's best player when he was with Man Utd is already out of the top competition at club level with a star-studded team behind him. Tells you everything eh. There is no such thing as a dream team. And Real Madrid is a bunch of Harlem Globetrotters with a coach that is too small to lead them to great things. Too much ego in the dressing room. And a coach like Jose Mourinho going to Real will be anti-football, because Jose is famed for his cagey tactics, not the free-flowing, joga bonito football the Real fans demand. They work for good wins and trohy laden seasons, but things aren't always the same at Madrid.

So I can only conlude one thing, Calderon is a pighead for constantly spewing rubbish to the media. And the owner Perez is a pighead with money. The circus is spectacular but lacks substance in reality.

Note to David Beckham who just tore his Achilles tendon, likely to keep him out of the World Cup. Get well soon Becks. The World Cup will not be a lesser competition without you, but the England team will be less off without your charisma.

Torres leaving Liverpool?

It was recently reported that Fernando Torres, the start striker for Liverpool, is considering a switch away from Liverpool in the summer if Liverpool fails to present itself as a serious title and trophy contender through recruitment of top quality players.

Top quality seems to be rather subjective especially in the world of Benitez. After all, he seems to believe that Aquiliani and Glen Johnson are pretty top quality players.

It is getting quite tiring to read about players wanting to leave the club because the club is not a title contender and thus would affect their future. I am not personally in the industry and thus, I suppose players have objectives to play for their country and maybe secure commercial deals? To achieve these goals, players may feel a need to be exposed to high profile competitions, in order to represent top brands and thus allow their agents to negotiate a good deal for all parties.

I can't help but think about all those inspirational movies revolving around sports. Movies such as "Cool Runnings", "The Mighty Ducks", "The Titans" and many more. These movies are usually based on a true story, depicting how "heart" can change things in a game, how passion and effort means more than just talent. It seems that in reality, talent, hard work and passion do exist but in a different manner. Talented players seek higher grounds, players work hard towards transferring to a better club, players are filled with passion for a club who serve them well, i.e. win win situation. I know I'm making a lot of generalisation here but reality seems to be so.

What might make a good movie would be a story about Portsmouth, if they manage to stay up in the Premiership despite all the odds against them. Maybe they can instill some fantasy back into my world, back into the world.

Torres did say these though:
"It's too soon to talk, I honestly think that we're going to be fourth, but for me Champions League qualification isn't so important."

"I've left my home and it's clear that I owe Liverpool many things, and I'm very happy here. The fans have treated my like one of their own, but I'm going to think about my future and hopefully it will be here. I think these fans deserve to win."

"Beyond thinking about me, I think the club deserve to get back to winning (trophies), but they know themselves that right now that it's far off."

I'll be keeping my hopes up, believing in passion, talent and hard work. Hopefully I won't be disappointed. It doesn't hurt to dream a little, sometimes?

Guest Pundit.

TST Pundits is proud to welcome a guest pundit "Gut". We are honoured to have a third pundit join us in our cause to provide our readers with some fun and interesting match predictions.

Do look forward to what Gut has predicted for the upcoming matches!

As the knights go marching in.

The Red Knights prepare themselves for a takeover of the board at Manchester United.

And garnering wholesome support from fans, incuding some mega rich ones, Man Utd might be set for a take by the group, mysteriously called the Red Knights.

Whether or not the Red Knights are supported, they sure hold water in many of the claims they have made so far. An established economist, a few investment bankers, rich businessmen, the Red Knights look like an organized consortium ready to wrest control from the Glazer family.

Ask me for an opinion? Who cares so long as Man Utd continues to win matches. I just hope these rumors and unsettling news do not put the season's plans i.e to win everything into jeopardy. Not that in any scenario Man Utd will be less off, but I expect Man Utd to be just as competitive in the transfer market in year 2011 whomever is sitting in the boardroom.

Take note though. The Red Knights might just pull off what I think is the biggest supporter coup in footballing history. And trust me, the global fanbase of Man Utd is capable of anything.

Tribute to Keith Alexander. 14/11/1956 to 03/03/2010.

A relatively unknown manager (Macclesfield Town) compared to the big boys in the Premier League, Keith Alexander nonetheless was a good man and a professional. Having been diagnosed with cerebral aneurysm in 2003, he went on to have his operations and returned to work since the operations. He had been struggling with his health and took some time off. Despite this, he was present for the game against Notts County just on Tuesday night, before passing away at the age of 53.

Cerebal aneurysm in simple terms refer to the bursting of blood vessels in your brain and could be due to high bloood pressure, atherosclerosis or genetic reasons. For all our readers who may be interested to lower their risk towards cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, you may find more information about a product named, Monacol.

I guess this only goes to show the magnitude of pressure managers are in while in charge of a football team. These days, managers do not simply have to worry about the game but also about many other aspects of the club. This includes culture, tradition and in some cases, personal or familial problems of their players.

The editors at TST offer our sympathy and condolences to his Keith Alexander's family and to the people at Macclesfield Town. To all managers and professionals out there, do remember to take time to relax and take it easy from time to time. Do not allow it to affect your work and level of professionalism, but at the same time, do not let your work overly affect your health and body.

Castrol Football Crazy is a waste of space on TV

Yes... it is time. Castrol Football Crazy is getting stale... and really boring.

One, I don't understand the funny accents. Yes, yes... I am Asian. I never thought I will say this, but will you (ESPN's program director) please put Shebby Singh on Football Crazy now? Maybe he will entertain us better. I am tired of Patrick Kinghorn's thick... and I mean really thick accent. He is surprisingly... predictable and yes... boring.

Two, who is Henry Golding? He has a thick slang too. I think its American. So we have got two really thick accents at work here. We have the Brit from London and we have got a host with a poseur accent. Its so confusing and so hard to switch between them two, I just give up and switch channels. Winter Olympics is more interesting.

And yes... Golding is boring. Forget the slapstick too, he is too much a pretty boy to suit slapstick comedy. Bring Andy Penders back. His one two punch with PJ Roberts was much more entertaining.

Three, I am tired of Jamie Yeo. She is boring too. And did I say I never quite look at her the same way after her split from Glenn Ong and hooked up with an angmoh. Not that I should be linking her work on TV with her private life, but its just too hard to look at her sitting beside two angmohs or angmoh pais and not think she is just one of "those".

Time to scrap Football Crazy or get rid of the lame hosts please.

Contender for World Player of the Year 09/10.

There is no question who is the in form player at the current moment.

The year of the World Cup is set to be the year Wayne Rooney stamps his mark as the best player on the planet.

I have long admired Rooney since he signed on as a kid at Old Trafford. The boy is pure passion and hunger, an insatiable desire to be the best there is, not just in the league but in the world.

He is becoming the complete player Alex Ferguson envisioned him to be. And this year, playing in his favourite role upfront has seen him unleashing his deadly instinct in front of goal, an instinct that was curbed when he was played on the left to accomodate another great player Cristiano Ronaldo. Two goals against AC Milan left the Italian giants reeling. It was no doubt that we are witnessing the best times of the Wayne Rooney show now.

Destined to be a legend at Old Trafford, there is no player that comes close to Rooney's complete package he brings onto the pitch everytime. A ferocious competitor, a hard tackler and a tireless worker are not often the attributes you will associate with a striker but that is Wayne Rooney the player, the one man show at times in Man Utd's testing season without Ronaldo.

Will we see Rooney collect the Ballon D'Or at the end of the season? To do that, Man Utd needs to win the Champions League and England will need to do well at the World Cup. I like the chances of both, with Man Utd coming into form and England under the tight rein of Fabio Capello. And with arguably the best player Wayne Rooney turning matches on their back like he did in Milan, I say the chances are great.

Over the moon, we got the Roon !!

Some things need to be earned.

Leon Best, the new striker at Newcastle United might not be a familiar name with many fans, including the Geordies' home fans but he might very well be the next big thing if his attitude is anything to go by.

To say that I admire his spirit is an understatement. In claiming that the No. 9 shirt at Newcastle United needs to be earned and not just worn because its available; it speaks volumes about the man's character. Leon Best eventually took a far less glamorous number 20. Whether or not Leon Best was pumping himself up to eventually be a Newcastle legend or shirking responsibility of the expectations to be bestowed on him with the donning of the legendary number 9 worn by Alan Shearer and Les Ferdinand, this man has earned my respect for making such a clear statement to the fans. This statement is great news to the club of Newcastle because it reflects strongly on his work ethic.

In the modern day, such a work ethic is rare. In my country, many of this generation have long forgotten about the work ethic of "earning what you deserve". Sure, a 9-5 job pay the bills, but dreams are often left chugged to a side because they are just "too hard to attain". Many of the young people in my country prefer that things fall into their laps than working their asses off for something worthwhile once in their life. It might be a case of complacency in the modern age, it might also be the consequences of a prosperous and peaceful environment a country enjoys.
I believe there is no true greatness without sacrificing something somewhere somehow. The famed psychologists call it delayed gratification. Leon Best could wear the No.9 shirt, he could claim a privileged position in name or bask in the glory of his predecessors, the truth is he never quite earn it. The same to a man in every stage of his life. If you truly believe in something, then by all means make it your priority to work at it. No shortcuts, no slack, no distractions. Aspire so, work so.

There is no greatness without working at it. There is no respect without working at it. If you don't work at it, you don't deserve it anyway. Some things just need to be earned, but how much of you are you willing to give up on?
